I had a Surgery on my left lower leg, just below the knee. It was due to motorcycle accident 12 years ago. I was on my way to work one morning, it was early like 6AM and I was driving through a village to get to the main road. I checked the left and right side of the intersection (with a slow driving speed maybe around 10-15km) and I did not find any approaching vehicles, so I continued.

And what happened next?

When I was half way crossing, I looked on my left side again only to find the SUV beside me already. I held on the bike with a strong grip and closed my eyes. When I opened my eyes, all I can see is sky and road as I was still rolling. When it stopped, I tried to stand up and checked my body and my motorcycle. I had minor damages in my bike but the front bumper of the SUV plus the headlights were totally wrecked. I found out that I had bruises on both of my elbows and thought that I can have it cleaned in the office clinic.

While picking up my things, I felt something was dripping in my left legs. When I lifted my pants, I saw a long deep cut on my skin. That was when the driver of the SUV started to panic and brought me to the hospital. I got lucky the driver was helpful and managed everything from buying medicines and paying all the bills. Thank God it was just a minor accident.

In this post, let us remember these important things for a safe motorcycle journey.

Pre-Ride Preparations:

Before hitting the road, there are several key aspects to consider to ensure your safety.

Gear Up:

Invest in high-quality safety gear, including a DOT-approved helmet, sturdy boots, protective clothing (such as leather or armored gear), gloves, and eye protection. Wearing the right gear is crucial in minimizing the impact of accidents and protecting your body.

Check Your Motorcycle:

Conduct a thorough pre-ride inspection to ensure your motorcycle is in optimal condition. Check the tire pressure and tread depth, test the brakes and lights, inspect the chain or belt drive, and verify that all fluids are at the recommended levels.

Ride Within Your Skill Level:

Be honest with yourself about your riding capabilities and choose a motorcycle that suits your experience. Take a motorcycle safety course to enhance your skills and knowledge of defensive riding techniques.

Be Visible:

Wear brightly colored or reflective gear to increase your visibility to other drivers. Choose a motorcycle with reflective surfaces and always use your headlights, even during the day.

Safety During the Ride:

Once you’re on the road, it’s important to maintain a safety-conscious mindset and follow best practices for a safe journey.

Defensive Riding:

Always assume that other drivers may not see you. Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, anticipate potential hazards, and use your mirrors frequently to stay aware of your surroundings. Be prepared to react swiftly and avoid dangerous situations.

Follow Traffic Laws:

Obey speed limits, traffic signals, and road signs. Never ride under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or fatigue. Yield to the right-of-way, use turn signals, and make your intentions clear to other road users.

Be Mindful of Road Conditions:

Motorcycles are more susceptible to road hazards than cars. Stay alert for potholes, gravel, wet surfaces, and other potential dangers. Adjust your riding style accordingly and use caution when navigating through challenging road conditions.

Avoid Distractions:

Stay focused on the road and eliminate distractions. Refrain from using your mobile phone, adjusting gadgets, or engaging in activities that divert your attention away from riding.

Be Prepared for Emergencies:

Familiarize yourself with basic motorcycle maintenance and carry essential tools, a first-aid kit, and emergency contact information. In the event of a breakdown or accident, having the necessary resources readily available can make a significant difference.

Safe motorcycling requires a combination of preparation, alertness, and adherence to traffic rules. By prioritizing safety, wearing appropriate gear, maintaining your motorcycle, and adopting defensive riding techniques, you can enjoy the thrill of riding while minimizing the risks. Always remember that your safety and well-being are paramount, and by following these guidelines, you can embark on exciting motorcycle adventures with confidence and peace of mind.
